New eCommerce package

It is a great option for small and medium sized operation that need an online marketing presence. The package provides product displays, shopping cart functions, and back of the store management (inventory, order processing, shipping, etc. It includes the ability to connect to payment gateways for processing credit cards and PayPal.

The software module that powers this package is based on Expression Engine (the software we use for all of our content management style websites) and once we set it up and configure it for a client, it is very easy for them to use. We are very impressed with its functionality.

For an example of it in use, checkout http://www.jlwilliams.org/strore/

Website launch - JacksonvilleNCApartments.com

One of the new tools is a server based software package that allows the client to update the web content right from the webpages - no HTML knowledge needed by the client. There’s no separate control panel and all changes are made in WYSWIG (What You See Is What You Get) so it is extremely easy to use. This is a great package for small to medium websites that don’t need content management software.

We also tried out Twitter.com new scaffold program. It allows a developer to builds a lot of the CSS using some simply tools that reduce a lot of the “fat finger” work and keep things organized.

While not really a tool, we also created and used a new layout CSS that is responsive. Which means the layout responds to the size and resolution of the screen the viewer is using. This eliminates the need to have totally different pages for mobile devices (smart phones and tablets). It resizes some of the content (like banners) to fit the screen or for really small screens it can be set to eliminate the banner altogether or use a different graphic. To see what I mean, open http://www.jacksonvilleNCapartments.com and size your window for nearly as wide as your screen. Then slowly reduce the width by grabbing the right side chrome and dragging it to the left. Watch what happens to the banner and to the sections below it. Or better yet, look at it on your desktop or laptop machine then on a tablet then on a smart phone.

Very Cool. We’ll be using more of these tools and techniques on future projects!

Portfolio update

In real estate they say the most important things are location, location, location. In SEO the most important things are content, content, content. Fresh and relevant content. So in that regard I have been very lax :(

I just added some new “portfolio pages”. While it doesn’t represent all of the projects I have been working on, it does give folks a peek into what I have been doing lately.
Things have been popping here at TMS with new clients, updates to existing client websites and quite a bit of subcontracting work for other companies. While our customers come first, I hope to pay more attention to my own “car” in the future and keep this site updated! Thanks for visiting!
